can't get installed software to work

I just installed Celtx, but it didn't put the shortcut symbol on the desktop and I don't know where it is. When I click on the file, I only get a list of all the components. I just came to Linux from MS. When I downloaded it there, I got a shortcut on my system, clicked on it, installed automatically, and then it was in the right format to immediately use.
Now, I installed it with Synaptic.
But when I click on it, it's unusable. It's just a list of every separate component. It's not formatted so I can work on it at all.
How do I get it in some kind of usable format? I did download the Linux version.

Probably inside this newly created directory is your executable. From the console you could 'cd' to this directory and do 'ls -l'. Executable files have "*" at the end (besides, the very first column which have attribute for the files will have 'x' in few positions). Out of this files try to find the one with a name closely associated with your application, and type this name at the command prompt.

I just typed celtx in the Run Command, and that opened up the program.
