Can't enter root password

Hello,
My SuSE 8.2 runs great except when I try to enter root password for a program. If I log on as root all is fine. When I'm logged as another user Kpackage asks for root password and I can't enter anything..... the cursor just sits in one spot like the keyboard is dead, but the enter key works.................. just sends me to wrong password. The same holds true if I run bash and try su............... won't let me enter. I'm sure it's something stupid...........:-)

Best Regards,
Dave255 in Buffalo

You didn't instal the kiosk right?

As any user: click 'Start' button -> Run Command -> Options -> run as a different user -> root -> pasword (type root password)
Command -> type command (enter)

or: open konsole
su
(type root passwd press enter)
e.g. rpm -Uvh whatever

Sometime the asterisk (*******) symbols doesn't appear on screen thet's OK for security reason. Maybe you need to check your permission (easy local) and your keyboard (Caps/Num lock).

Have fun :-)

Yikes, you need to do some reading on security issues my friend! Never have blank root/admin passwords on a NOS (Network Operating System). That is begging for trouble.

I have a root password and firewall on my access point................ I can log on as root with no problem......... When I am logged on to my user account and open a shell and try su it asks for the password, but my keystrokes do nothing......... tried cap and num lock............. no dice.. Enter just drops me to wrong password............... Thanks for trying anyway....... :-)

ok, the reason there is no echoing to the screen when you enter the password might be that it's simply disabled. So that shouldn't be a concern (though i could be wrong and it is the root of all the problems)

Now there can be some other issues... for instance you might be using a different keyboard layout as root, to your standard user account, i got that once, don't ask how. so Z had to be entered as Y and (qwerty vs qwertz) not to mention the german language umlautes (you know o u a with double dots on em)

i know i'm grasping on straws here, but i had that problem in SuSE 8.1 pro and it was the keyboard layout ... i picked something stupid during the install. It iritated me so much i reinstalled and did it write in the end. (after i'd worked out what it was)
