Can't develop permission to edit menu.lst

From the Ubuntu terminal (as root) I am trying to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst.

When I finish editing, I get the same message re: permission to change a read-only file.

I have tried sudo and su but the permission is still required.

Can someone give me a step-by-step approach to changing to file characteristic, editing the file, and returning it to grub as edited so that it comes up at boot?

editors like vi will allow you to override the attribute by force, and it's there for a good reason, so keep it as it is. under vi, just use :w! to force a save from sudo.

Thanks

Thanks. I'm just starting Vi and the instruction list I had was somewhat arcane. I think I'm on the right track now.

NO! At the end of the edit I typed :w! and vi refused the command.

what's wrong now ???
