Can't connect to internet with Linksys WUSB854GC
 

Hi, I just installed Ubuntu on my computer, and I'm having problems connecting to my house's wireless network. When I plug the network card in, I get a message saying that I'm disconnected from the network. So, I click on the network manager to try to connect, and under Wireless Networks, it says "disconnected", with no option to connect.

On the Ubuntu help file, it says to click on the network I want to connect to. When I do that, it doesn't do anything. The only thing that the network manager will let me do are "connect to a hidden wireless network" or "create new wireless network", and the fact that it can detect that there is a wireless network means that I don't want to do either of those things.

I've tried a number of things, but it just seems completely absurd that the help file would tell me to do something that the system won't let me do.

It's most likely a driver issue with your wireless NIC. You might try a search for more info on the NIC using the exact model and version number - if you can determine the actual chipset inside, you should be able to determine your options for getting it to work.

If you (as root) run lsmod from the command line, it will list a wireless driver module if there is one being loaded. lsusb or lspci should list your hardware device - at least what Linux thinks it is.

Wireless NICs can be a problem in Linux since the manufacturers do not generally provide Linux drivers. USB Wireless NICs seem to be more problematic than other types.

The last resort is to use ndiswrapper using the Windows drivers, but I would do a little more research on this particular NIC and Linux support first.

Your Linksys just appears to be factory-programmed, but at the gunpoint of microsoft, that is, it is like a winmodem. However you are lucky, overclock.net has provided a solution to flash it and become linux compatible. Go to this site and download the necessary things to make it ready.
