Hello there! I was wondering if what's the most friendly-user/n00b-user Linux OS? I'm using it for my mom's laptop, I want the easiest one for her. Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You can use LQ's Download Linux to get ISO images that can be used. You really have not provided any hardware information for your Mom's Laptop therefore we cannot specify any specific Gnu/Linux to use.

Hi.

Is it an old computer, RAM? I see a lot of people say Mate or Cinnamon but I like KDE, that's what I give my nephews.

Start outs on GNU/Linux might want to try out something hands off like Xubuntu from the Ubuntu lineup. Xubuntu uses XFce which is familiar to Windows migrants in general function.

However, I'll say this. If your mom is better skilled with working with Windows, and the laptop came with Windows, just stick to Windows. Don't try to mess your mom up by dropping a system on her lap she knows nothing about. You can still find a lot of GNU/GPL and other freeware and free software for Windows just as much as GNU/Linux. Plus you might get better driver support vectors.

You can always dual boot and let her learn at her own pace.

Start out with an easy-to-use distro and desktop like Linux Mint+Cinnamon. With 3 gig of memory you can run Cinnamon smoothly. Otherwise take Mint + Xfce desktop. Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment and also easy-to-use.

Advantage of Mint: everything will be installed during setup (i.e. multimedia packages).

Okay thanks, the reason I want to change her windows to linux because of security.

I dual boot my nephews who game so "must have" microcoughed and then go all the wrong places on the web... :doh: so they FB me from GNU\Linux-Debian-KED (with Apper set to automatically prompt security updates) all the time, "we need help with" losesdoh$!

I was surprised my moms old pc let her get the w10 update so she won't need Linux yet.
