Can't change volume levels

I'm having this wierd problem where I can't change the audio volume levels on my system. For instance, when playing xmms, the volume I get is a constant. If I need to increase the volume,I have to do it from the mixer settings.I can't change it from the application itself.I didn't have this problem when I used kde.But now I'm on to flux and this problem is really bugging me.Please advise.
