Can't change screen resolution RH9/KDE

Hi,
I am a newbie to Linux administration,
I have successfully installed RedHat 9, everything went smoothly,
but I have some problems with changing my screen resolution

When trying to change it from System settings->Screen, it
says 800x600 which is right, I want at least to have 1024x768
so I choose that, restart my computer and what happens?
it is still 800x600, after trying to read docs from around RedHat and the web
I found out that the config file is in /etc/X11/"XF86 ... "

Everytime I try to change the settings, i look check the XF86 ... file,
but it seems the new settings is not set.

I have also tried SuSE Personal.8.2, but I cant get higher resolution
than 800x600

Can anyone help me out here, pleeeeeease ;-)

Info:
GFX card: Aopen Aeolus TI4200 8X (NVIDIA GForce 4 TI4200 8X)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 957p

The monitor does not exist in RH9s list over monitors, so I am using
an unprobed monitor, I guess it is here the problem lies :) but have no clue
what to do.

thanks in advance,
Thomas A.

Try to directly change it in the XF86Config file.

The # mark at the start of a line comments it out, so delete if from the line that you want and put one in front of the 800x600 line. If you do this in X, restart your Xsession.

You can also change it on the fly with ctrl_alt_+ and ctrl_alt_-.

Refresh rates

Thanks,
I am starting to find the problem, it is the hor.refresh rates of the monitor
When the installer did not find any matches for my monitor it sets it to unprobed rates (30 -60 or something, cant remember), it seems that these rates is low or something for higer resolutions than 800x600,
So what I did was to try the Samsung monitor closest to mine and restart, and it worked,

Now I just have to find my manuals for the monitor to check if these refresh rates ar OK ;-)

regards,
Thomas A.

Cool.

Sometimes the manufacturers' webpages can be useful for finding that stuff.
