Can't Change Screen Res. in RH 7.2

For some reason my screen resolution is stuck at 1024x768 and I cannot change it back to 800x600. When I run Xconfigurator as root I get this error

Server doesn't exist, cant continue.
tried to use ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA

I run xf86config and I change the modes for 16 bit color to 800x600 only, but when I start X again all I get is 1024X768 resolution again. I also tried to change the screen resolution right in X by doing CTRL+ALT+ - but it doesn't work either. I don't mind the resolution change except that it makes multi-tasking very slow because I can imagine that it uses much more processor and memory resources to display at this resolution. Any ideas on how to change it back??

edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

make sure the Display sections you use have this

Modes "800x600" "1024x768"

and use the numlock keypad to switch modes
