Hello,

I try to change to Lilo in the Mandrake control center.
Change the waiting time, names etc.. But i always get an error: syntax error near line five in /etc/lilo.conf.

these are the lines:
4: vga=normal
5: default=linux Mandrake 8
6: keytable=/boot/be-latin1.klt

They only thing I can think of are that there are spaces between Linux, Mandrake and eight. Is that a problem? If so how do I change the Lilo.conf.

I tried it with i(insert), changed and then ESC and :wq.

But then i get the message "read-only file use !(explanation mark)" Can someboby give me the EXCACT syntax to change it??

Thanks

Try making your 5th line with only linux and not the full linux Mandrake 8, I don't see how this could be a problem, but I only use linux or a single word when I have changed the name of my default boot up.
Oh and make sure you always run /sbin/lilo to make the changes before rebooting to check your configuration.

Yikes! anyone?

Not a 'fatal' error for your sys, just for lilo. Post your lilo.conf and someone should be able to help.

Well, i won't annoy you with my lilo.conf. I found the problem I think...
Apparently the name after default has to be exact the same as the name furhter on defined for the linux OS.
Just makes me wonder why they were different in the first place must have messed things up.

Ah well, her's my lilo.conf anyway (partially):

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=linux ......(HAS TO BE THE SAME)
keytable=/boot/be-latin1.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=150
message=/boot/message-graphic
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux .......(AS THIS LABEL NAME)
root=/dev/hda8
append=" quiet"
vga=788
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux-nonfb
root=/dev/hda8
read-only

and yes, I am a newbie.
Thanks guys.

Are you getting this at boot up.... if you are, try doing a ctrl-x and that will get you to a regular lilo prompt instead of the map image it might be looking for.
if that doesn't work, your path to your map is not being recognized for some reason or its corrupt. I really don't know though, I never use those silly map graphical lilo screens.
