can't boot fedora from install dvd

I'm new to Linux so i bought a book to read up. when i try to boot from the DVD that came with the book it won't boot. if i look in my computer in that drive it doesn't see the DVD if i put a windows disk in it boots. i have a HP desk top and a fedora 8 DVD i also tried a fedora 9.Thanks for any help.

Not to insult you...but you are sure you have a DVD drive and not just a CD-ROM drive, right?

if i look at this disk in my laptop it works. both systems are xp pro
