cable modem help
I recently got cable internet, and when I hooked it up to my computer it worked ok. but after restarting, it seemed I had a hostname problem, it seem that it was automatically set by the internet? but this created somekind of host name error. then I couldn't get on the internet either. after a long while of trying, I got the hostname to read: localhost again, but I still don't get the internet...

is there a way to start over, or some fix? I'm using mandrake 9.2, i've made the changes in the control panel for the network.

it took a great number of trys to get mandrake to realize the host name had changed.

Currently my system is connected directly to the cable modem, via ethernet card. how should I set this up?

Look at:

1. your ip settings, is it correct?
2. Your gateway, is that correct?
3. Your resolvers, are the entries in there correct?

Those would be the first few things I would do.

1. your ip settings, is it correct?

I have my IP to be set by DCHP, it seems to be set automatically and changes every so often. (its been day 2, and for now I'm using win xp ipconfig to check my ip and stuff.)

2. Your gateway, is that correct?

I'm not sure what the default gateway should be, if the IP is dynamic, will the gateway also change?

3. Your resolvers, are the entries in there correct?

I don't know what resolvers are....

should the DNS suffix i'm seeing in win xp used somewhere in linux?

Ok, you say you are checking your settings from winxp. So, I'm guessing you are running a router correct?

For question #2: The gateway, should be your router IP

For question #3: Check /etc/resolv.conf. Make sure the nameserver fields in there are correct.
