Cable modem and Linux?
Hi guys and gals...I have (hopefully) a short solution to a question about either SuSe 8.1 or Mandrake 9.1.
I have a USB 3Com Cable modem and Pent. 4, 2.4, 512 ram, ATI Radeon 9000 128mb, SB Audigy 5.1 sound card, etc., I was wondering if any of the 2 distros support what I have before I parition my hard drive which is running Wind. XP Home Ed.? I have Partition Magic 8, so I know I can partition a NTFS partition for Linux... but am truly wondering if my video card is supported and of course to get to the Net, my Cable modem? Thanks for all your help... Wildjoey:D |
Everything seems like it would be ok, but for your cable modem, do you have a model number? That might help us determine if its going to work or not, as some do and some might not when it comes dealing with USB Modems.

Does the cable modem have an ethernet port on it? If you are running xp, I assume your computer has an ethernet card on it. Linux is much easier to work with the eth rather than usb. You will save yourself a lot of time at least. Just my .02.

in my experience if you install linux with a nice gui interface such as redhat (which is what i'm using but there are otheres) then it should configure automatically i've never had a problem with mine
|
I don't know about Suse but Mandrake is the ONLY distro (and I've tried lots of distros) that has never automatically configured my internet access. I always had to go in and make some changes and it seemed that with every new release I tried I had to make different changes than the last one.

That's funny. Out of suse, redhat, mandrake, debian, gentoo, knoppix, and slackware, redhat and suse were the only ones to not get configured correctly. Different machines different results I suppose.

"gentoo"
I thought that the point of gentoo was that it was for more experienced users who knew how to do this...I don't think gentoo was ever designed to do this sort of thing for you. |
Why not get a router?
My Windows systems and including LINUX are setup to automatically get an IP address from the router. |
