Cable internet works great after reboot only

I am running Libranet (debian) My net connection works great for a while but if I walk away and leave it idle the connection drops, I have a external modem connected to a lan card, I have a computer running XP on the same connection and it works ok.
What could be wrong? I'm sure its some thing stupid that I'm overlooking.

Thanks for the help

Maybe a little more information would help. Is it a static IP? Do you use DHCP? Any extra info in the log files which could help. Could be that the DHCP license is not being renewed properly.

There is always the hardcore way of running a script which will ping a location every x minutes to keep the connection alive.

The remedy is to find out WHAT is being dropped.

The IP lease to the cable modem, or the connection to the modem from the computer.

Im guessing that since hes obtaining an IP address from his ISP through the modem that DHCP is enabled... just an observation of mine.
