C compiler and MAKE problems

Hiya all,

After taking the advice of people on these forums, I finally got SuSE 9.1 personal installed on my computer. I've begun poking about a bit, but have hit a couple of problems.

I was *trying* to install a game, and was following the instructions to the letter, when I hit a couple of problems. Firstly, when I ran ./configure, it runs through the install routine, until it checks for a C compiler, which is then reports as not having one. I have found one (I think ), but after I do ./configure, and type make, the console reports back 'no such command'.

I am logged in as SU (cause I assumed I needed to be), but have still had no luck. So please could someone out there give me some pointers in the right direction.

Thanks in advance

Nick

I believe I read elsewhere on LQ that SUSE 9.1 personal does not include
a C compiler. It is a watered down distro that is free. Pro must be purchased.

But you should be able to find a C compiler somewhere on the internet.
Try Google.

cheers

I've already found one through Google, but like I said, when I try and make it, SuSE rejects the command as unknown

This is ALMOST correct :)

Personal comes as a downloadable ISO or you
can buy it. On the DVD there's also development
tools included.

But you can go and grab the rpm's from their ftp
server, or just add it to the list of sources in YaST2.

Cheers,
Tink

Eh?

No compiler? What do you mean? No gcc at all?

Gah, just grab something from GNU.

It's quite hard to compile gcc without gcc, though :)

In this case I think SuSE's rpm's are the way to go.
