Burning a Installed system onto cd or dvd

Is it possible to burn a installed system onto a dvd because of the size and run that from the cd-rom, I don`t mean running from a live cd.
Using Ubuntu 9.10

For example I have tried running a installed system on a memory stick which works fine, can that be achieved from a cd or dvd.

Thanks

I don't think you can really do this because you need to be able to write somewhere while the system is running: cds and dvds are basically read only devices. I do remember once reading that you can use a combination of cd/dvd + a usb stick for keeping changes persistant between boots. However, usb sticks come in much larger sizes than cds or even dvds, so I guess you'd be better off just using a large: eg 8 or 16 Gb usb stick.

You can do that. That is how people actually make live cd's. They make a working system then transfer it to a cd/dvd.

If you want there are already live DVD's made. See Gentoo's for a test drive.

If you mean persistence storage that is slightly different. It can be done also.

Hi jefro,

I think the OP does mean persistent storage. Any chance you could post a link on the topic?
