burner hangs after blanking with growisofs

Due to an interest in blanking some backup media to clear out sensitive data, I elected to blank DVD+RW using the following:

growisofs -Z /dev/sr0=/dev/zero

Sometimes, the burner appears to be hung midpoint in the process, resulting in the need for a reboot. Years ago, when extensively playing with growisofs, I am sure that I blanked media several times. (Normally it is not required, or desired.)

On the last instance, the blanking failed at the 41% point, and I got errors that growisofs could not flush cache.

I have tried this several times, without KDE running, and cannot duplicate it. It can run for a while until it fails.

Any pointers on how I can better analyze what's going on, so that I can fix this unfortunate annoyance? My Slackware systems go months without rebooting, and a silly DVD burner shouldn't be causing this kind of headache.

I was able to duplicate this in command mode, without KDE running.

I blank disks with this command:
Code:
cdrecord blank=fast dev=/dev/sr0

Unfortunately, that will not truely blank a DVD, and sensitive data snippets could be obtained by scanning a DVD. The command that I provided will write zeros on most of the media, so that examining previously written data using an ordinary reader is impossible.

I didn't realize how much heat dissipation there is when writing DVDs!

This problem appears to be solved!

I found that the DVD unit got very warm when writing. This probably would have been OK, except that the fan on the power supply failed, and the inside of the computer case was warm to begin with. I haven't pulled to power supply to replace the fan yet, but opening up the case, and getting cooler air circulating has seemed to eliminate the write failures.

The problem is solved, attributed to a cooling hardware failure!

You can do 'blank=all' for a full overwrite.
