Question building rpm

I want to change a software package to an rpm. I have written an installation script for this package, that basically un-tars the files, and copies them to different directories (without compiling the source code.) I was wondering if I can just transfrom my installation script to the rpm spec, without actually following the rpm spec conventions. This is the first time i'm builing an rpm, and i'm lost.... any inputs would be greatly apprecited.

"I want to change a software package to an rpm."

checkinstall does what you want to do:

With checkinstall you unpack a tarball, cd to the proper directory, and then do:

and checkinstall will create a rpm package for you in the /usr/src tree.

If you want to chug onward and finish your script then take a look at the checkinstall source code to learn what to do.

Be prepared. Create a LifeBoat CD.
