building netcat

i'm attempting to build netcat on a redhat 9.0 box. i downloaded the source file, gunzipped it, and untarred it. ran "make linux" (per the README), and i got the following output:

make -e nc XFLAGS='-DLINUX' STATIC=-static
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/netcat'
cc -O -s -DLINUX -static -o nc netcat.c
/tmp/ccKCEIJs.o(.text+0x14f5): In function `main':
: undefined reference to `res_init'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [nc] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/netcat'
make: *** [linux] Error 2

any ideas?

thanks in advance for all you help!
