building kernel 2.6.39 on kernel 2.4.20


hi
i am trying to update my 2.4.20 kernel to 2.6.39
when i config and try yo make i get this error :
Make[1]: *** no rule to make target `|' needed by `firmware/e100/d101m_ucode.bin.gen.s' . Stop.
Make[2]: *** [firmware] Error 2

Are you building it on a 2.6.x host ?

no i am building on redhat 9.0 with kernel 2.4.20

I'd suggest that you should probably build it on system with a similar level of kernel so that the build tools will not be so far out of date.

i changed configuration and disabled modules that showed that error but after that every thing goes till last step "make install"
it shows the following : error no module BusLogic found for kernel 2.6.39
also pay attention that i am running this through vmware workstation 9

That sounds like an incomplete build - possibly caused by partial compilation due to errors (as in having the BusLogic drivers configured for use, but not getting compiled/linked for some reason).

You might try saving your configuration, then doing a "make mrproper" to clean out any possible leftover crud. Copy the configuration file back, then start with a "make oldconfig" and then follow the usual procedure.
