building gcc slackware

I'm trying to build slackware's gcc V2.95.3 on my slackware system. The problem that I'm having is that I cannot seem to find any good documentation on how to do this. I've checked the slackware site, but have yet to come up with anything worth while.

I need to build gcc because we currently have no c compiler on this system. The people who installed the slackware did not install this applcation (why I don't know). The package that I got is from the slackware site, the version of slackware that's installed is 8.1. So in a nut shell I inhierited this mess.

Is it a .TGZ file?

If so, as root:

"installpkg /path/to/package/[packagename].tgz"

Hi there all. I am planning on upgrading gcc on slack 11. Let me explain. I am trying to install the nvidia driver, and among the possible causes of failure, it says that 'version of gcc differs from the one used to build the target kernel'. I just upgraded from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel, and the nvidia driver didn't work on either one. So, just to make sure it's not gcc, i want to upgrade it, to see if the nvidia driver will work.

Can somebody explain how to proceed with this installation? Thanks in advance for the aid.
