Building a LiveCD using genkernel

I'm trying to build a bootable CD following the instructions on gentoo-wikiDOTcom/HOWTO_build_a_LiveCD_from_scratch. It initially boots OK, bringing up the menu for the different kernels, starts the boot process, and then after a few lines it resets the screen and prints repeated text on the screen.

For example, at one point it looks like a prompt, but if I type anything, the first letter gets repeated multiple times (10 or more).

Any ideas? I didn't stray too far from the instructions; used the .config provided; added hotplug and coldplug to the root runlevel; thats pretty much it.
