buffer problem with realplayer and streaming audio

I just installed realplayer8, and it works fine on files that I already have in my computer. If I try to listen to streaming audio:

1) If the site doesn't have an embedded player, and if realplayer is already open, clips play fine.
2) If the site doesn't have an embedded player, but realplayer isn't already open, it plays for about 1 1/2 seconds, then buffers for about 10 seconds, then plays a few seconds in fast-forward, then buffers again...
3) If the site has an embedded player, it behaves the same as (2)

So whenever I try to listen to BBC radio, all I get are a few snatches of fast-forward gibberish. Mozilla says that the realplayer plugin is installed and enabled. (I'm using mandrake 9.1 and mozilla 1.3) Has anyone else had this problem? Or know how to fix it? Thanks!
