BSD?
 

I have been reading this afternoon on BSD, and almost all of the sources I've looked at seem to point out that BSD is more secure, more stable, and faster performing than Linux. And not only that, but since all GNU packages work for BSD as well, that there's no reason *not* to use BSD. I don't know if this is propoganda, or if there is truth to the issue.

What do you guys think?

I think the same, my RedHat 9.0 works as an old snail, especially when I run a GNOME application such as Mozilla. Boot process and initial probing of software is incredibly slow as well whilst FreeBSD I have does it within seconds. But that's my initial impressions, I guess there's more software and drivers for Linux although most of the soft can be ported to FreeBSD and may be the other ones.

You can install GNOME on FreeBSD though, correct? How about thoughts on OpenBSD, FreeBSD, or NetBSD?

I hate to think that maybe I made a wrong decision when deciding to use Linux as my web server OS.

Before giving up on Linux, try doing a Gentoo installaiton. I think you will be plesantly surprised at not only the speed, but the packaging system as well as documentation for such things as security hardening.

If you do go with with BSD install, look into OpenBSD. They focus on security and purport to have the most stable OS period.

I guess it just makes me wonder why sooo many people use Linux if BSD is (supposedly) better? There must be reasoning behind it. I've already got everything set up on this Linux box, I'd really hate to throw it all away to learn BSD. Though I'm sure it's similar, file and locations of things no doubt change a bit.

BSD is a great, secure system. But the fact is, there is so much more development going on with Linux these days. FreeBSD is a personal favorite of mine and I love the BSD ports system (which is why I love Gentoo so much).

Yes, but that Linux development works with BSD, correct? At least, that's how I understood it.
