Browsing while downloading with Mozilla

Red Hat 8 KDE
Mozilla 1.0.1
ASUS A7V133 | Athlon Thunderbird 1GB | 256MB PC133 RAM
Supra Fax Modem 288 external modem
When I download files the speed is usually around 3.2KB/sec depending on the server.
In my case this is a good speed!
The problem I'm having is that when I try to browse and download at the same time, the browser takes extremely long to load or pages won't load at all.
According to the Download manager the speed stays the same.
I tried using Konqueror to browse, same results.

When I use XP Pro and IE6 on this system I can download and browse at the same time no problem.

This leads me to believe that there is something that can be adjusted in Mozilla or modem settings in RH8.

Any ideas for what to try?

What internet connection do you have?

A phone modem maximum bandwidth is about 8 kilobytes. On an average its about 4 to 5 kilobytes.

A cable modem's bandwidth is up to 2 megabits or more.

If you are downloading on a phone modem, you won't have enough bandwidth if you are downloading a file at 5 kilobytes a second. DSL, ADSL, or a cable will have more bandwidth so you can download a file at around 200 kilobytes and still have enough for viewing web pages.

You can upgrade to newer version of Mozilla like 1.4 or Mozilla firebird.
