Broken YaST
After doing an online update on SUSE 9.1, YaST stopped working. Nothing happens now after entering the password. Does anybody have any idea what to do?

try it from the command line
either "yas"t for text, or I assume its "yast2" for graphic. |
yast hangs
Thanks for the suggestion,
Starting yast from the command line did nothing. After trying system repair and system upgrade from the 9.1 distro, I gave up. Being pragmatic, I did a new install. The lesson I have learned so far is that YaST updating can be dangerous. In my experience Fedora is not better in this respect. I got similar problems with Fedora Core 1, before switching to Suse. In both cases doing an online update of a standard system resulted in problems with the updating system itself. A couple of questions: 1) Does Yast save the complete configuration somewhere, to facilitate a reinstall? It would be nice if I could select the packages I want to have installed once and for all. 2) I think the problems with yast arose because of problems in downloading some updates. What is the best way to do this safely? Jonas |
not sure what you were trying to update. I've used SusE for desktop linux for a long time and I've not had a problem with YAST. That said, I don't do automatic updates or just select everything. I am very selective when I run Yast. Certain things I want to build myself and download the sources.

online update of Yast could be dangerous
YaST stopped working after a general update on a standard SuSE install. There were some download problems in the update, presumably something related to YaST itself. Once there, my problems started. After a fresh install, the online update worked.
