Broadcast message - example

I need to create simple client/server model.

My remote host has to send broadcast message asking for "user name" of all systems connected in the domain and other systems should respond to this message and reply with their names.

Remote host is in Windows and other systems running in linux.

Is it possible to do this? if yes, can you give me example or can you suggest some documentation?

Thanks in Advance
