Bringing up Eth0?
 

Problem bringing up eth0 , get failed emssage during bootup.

Any suggestions? Using newest VMWARE.

what distribution are you using and what version?

make sure you are using vmware 4, and the card that should be detected is an "family net card" or something of that sort

what does the error message say exactly?

is your eth0 static or is it using DHCP?

did it work before?

if so, when did the problem start?

what distro are you using?

it would be easier for people to help you if you provide as much information about your situation as possible...

eth0 should be dynamic and DHCP

trying to get internet to work, never started.

mandrake 9.2

vmware 4 latest build

realtek ethernet card, same config as win98 virual machine and the win98 virtual surfs the net fine.

mandrake detects as

PCI AMD PCNETLANCE Card

this is the network card that mandrake should identify your card as; do a search on google to see what the driver name is

since i'm not sure what the driver is, i will tell you (against my will) to get into the mandrake control panel and use the tool that identifies and detects hardware and ethernet cards

tell us what the error is shown duing mandrake startup, or post output of dmesg in terminal

You may see this problem if you have created a virtual machine with bridged networking and install a Linux-Mandrake 7.2 guest operating system on a host machine with a live network interface card.

During an expert installation of the Linux-Mandrake guest operating system, when you are configuring the network, the network probe finds a Lance PCnet driver, instead of the AMD PC/Net 32 driver supported by VMware products. Linux-Mandrake cannot configure the Lance driver correctly for use with the virtual machine's Ethernet adapter, so the network doesn't get configured.

As a workaround, you need to configure the AMD PCnet32 driver within your Linux- Mandrake installation. Follow these steps.

1. During the installation, when you reach the Configure networking section, select the Configure Local Network option.

2. The following error appears:

Insmod'ing module lance failed at

Click OK to continue.
3. The following message appears:

Found Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]|79c970 [PCnet LANCE] net interfaces. Do you have another one?

Since this isn't the driver you want installed, click Yes.
4. From the list that appears, select AMD PC/Net 32 and click OK.

5. To have Linux-Mandrake search for this device, click Autoprobe.

6. The following message appears:

Found Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]|79c970 [PCnet LANCE], [AMD]|PC/Net 32 net interfaces. Do you have another one?

Since this is the driver you want to install, click No.
7. When you are asked to specify an IP address and net mask while configuring network device eth0, select the bootp/dhcp option. Do not enter an IP address if you are using DHCP to supply an IP address to your virtual machine.

8. Continue configuring your Linux-Mandrake guest operating system.

it seems mandrake 9.2 has same problem as 7.2, the adapter is detected incorrectly; see what this will help you accomplish
