brightness suddenly decreases when media players are launched..

my media players like vlc and mplayer player started behaving strangely from yesterday.the moment i launch them,the display brightness decreases.i cannot understand why an application affects another completely different one.its very irritating to repeatedly set the there a solution to this?it happened after i installed gparted software from the terminal.can this trigger the malfunction?i run hardy

Does the brightness revert when you close the programs? The option "Theater Mode" comes to mind, I just don't remember where I saw it.

Maybe your media player modifies the gamma settings.

To make sure if that has something to do, you can try this:
  • open a terminal and run "xgamma" on it, note down the output of remember it (usually 1,1,1 for red,green,blue)
  • run your video player
  • run xgamma again in the terminal, and see if the values changed

If the values changed then your media player is changing the gamma factor for some odd reason. Look in the preferences dialogs and check if there's something about gamma or brightness and disable it if possible.

no it doesnt.and i hav to meddle with the brightness icon on panel to restore it.and the problem is not with any any one but all players which were working fine till yesterday.
