brightness and volume problems with Ubuntu 8.04 on Gateway M-6846

I have just installed Ubuntu on my Gateway M-6846 using wubi, and everything is working well except for the brightness and the volume. When I try to adjust brightness, I get the icon on the screen that shows the brightness going down, however, the actual brightness of the screen doesn't change. As for the volume, it can be adjusted, but turning it down to anything below about 50% makes it completely inaudible.

My graphics card is the Intel GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller, and the sound controller is an Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller. Here is what I get for lspci:

Did your brightness/volume issue finally get resolved? Brightness problem still exists on mine.

I didn't get the volume fixed, but upgrading to 9.04 fixed the brightness problem.

Strange. I still have that problem despite using 9.04.

from a previous post, It was suggested turning off the light sensor. For me I now have a nice brite pix after putting black tape over it. Problem is not fixed but at least I can see what i`m doing
