I will assume you refer to Ubuntu or one of its brothers (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.). I use Mandriva here for its GUI-centric administrative tools and utilities, but in my more than ten years as a Linux user, I have found that Linux is Linux. Changing distributions will not change hardware support, because all distributions are created from the same source code base. As a first step. you should check the ubuntu hardware compatibility database to see if your wireless and video adapters are supported. If the hardware is supported, see what help you can get from the Ubuntu forums (they have an outstanding user community). Even though you have tried everything you have read, or seen posted, there may still be something you can do. Experienced Ubuntu users will provide the best source of help . . .

Your post does not much give information about your issue. Reading this one can only make out that you are not able to install drivers. But what is the exact error message you see on the screen? And how are you trying to install the drivers? And what drivers do you need to install? What is the hardware that you are using? What is the wireless chip in your machine? Onboard chip or is it a card that you have put?

Post the output of lspci -vv command here in
Code:

Code
tags so that we can better know your hardware.

The OP already has a thread on their issues with wireless, but they seem to have abandoned it.

leo114, please respond in your other thread about what it is that isn't working. People are trying to help you there.

hello linuxlover.chaitanya
Thanks for that command. It opened a lot of information, but i can`t seem to copy/paste it to you.Is there anything I should look for or how do I send it to you? Thanks again

dear linuxlover.chaitanya
Im trying this way to send the information. Thank you once again

brightnes, wireless, can`t reinstall 9.10, can`t change res.

hi
after spending weeks trying to fix the above problems, I have had no success. As a newbie will they ever be fixed or do I go back to vista. I`m not angry just disapointed.

lupusarcanus 01-02-2010 12:02 AM

Elaborate on your problem, add detail to the question, and provide system specifications.
What Linux Distro are you using? Ubuntu 9.10?
Why can't you install it?
How do you change the brightness on your computer?
What model wireless card?
Any error messages? Provide those always.
Whats your current screen resolution? What's it supposed to be?
What solutions have you tried?
Terminal output of "lspci" and "dmesg" would be nice.

It's likely fixable but you will need to help us help you first.

Lastly, please you proper English, proper punctuation, and full versions of acronyms and abbreviations.

You have a spell check option right there, so use it. We don't expect perfect English but at least try harder than that pitiful attempt.

Sorry to be critical, but you have to show some legitimate effort into solving your problems and doing the best you can or you won't get any help. Period.

Best Regards,

leopard

It does definitely seem that your wireless adapter has been detected. You can see it is Intel 5100.

continuing. I can not change the brightness in any way. I put tape over the automatic light sensor. Not sure what its function is. When it is uncovered, the picture goes all most black.

thanks again for your patience. I just tried downloading the fglrx graphics driver, which previously refused to load, loaded perfectly. I can now, at least, read just about everything. My resolution is now 1280x800. the native resolution is 1440x900,however I can live with this. Maybe a driver will turn in the future. I must say that I am going to persevere with this system, as it is very good when it runs well. I am sure with your help, I will make some sense out of it all.

hello linuxlover.chaitanya.
The results of your last post requesting the results of iwconfig are below. I think it says the access point is not associated. I have no idea how to do that. Virginbroadband can not help, they have no experience with ubuntu. A technician I talked with did not know how to fix it, but did say, if i could fix it I would have the best system out there.

It does seem that your wireless card is already detected. In the system tray on the right top corner, left click the network icon and select the wireless network for your ssid and click connect. It should ask you for the passphrase if it is encrypted network.

hello linuxlover.chaitanya
It was your last comment that solved my problem. I kept entering the security codes everywhere, except the passphrase area. I put the codes in the passphrases, and everything is now working perfectly. Again thanks for your patience. A big thanks for taking the time to sort my problems.

Great. Just mark the thread as solved so that other members coming here for same issue can find their solutions right away.
