Cool Brand NEWbie - Easy Questions to start

Just for starters, I am brand new to Linux, I have an older brother who is pretty efficient in Linux, though i would like some experts opinions in my case. I am looking to put Linux on my desktop computer, run minor apps.....BUT definitely run a websever, ftp server, file server, mail server...and what not....thus i need security yet reliability. My bro can help me as far as the progs, due to he has done them already....what i need:

1 What distro should I go with Mandrake or Fedora?

My System:

Dual PIII - 866
SuperMicro Motherboard
1 Gig RAM
SoundBlaster Live Xgamer
Hercules Prophet III
Plextor CD burner
Creative DVDrom

In other words, basic old school stuff......

2 Will i be able to use my system....or should i build a linux box?

Thanks So much and i cant wait to get in on the action

Shelby

why not try both and see which you like best..........
depends on what you want linux to do for YOU!!

ease of setup, ease of configuration, ease of use, etc.

all distros are pretty much the same they all pretty much have the same programs same typical kernel and run all the same programs that linux offers what 320MB is saying just try both of them which ever you like for installation or less post installationproblems is prolly the one you going to stick with

if i were u i would use mandrake its the best for absolute newbies
then if you want to get to know linux a little more i would deffinitly choose SLackware you should first start at distrowatch.com and pick and download you favorite distro

have fun man and hope to see more questions from ya
