now you need a server, i would recomend a linux based server.

depends what you want to do. If you just want to host a few static pages, just ask the person to whom you bought the domain name to provide the infrastructure. Should be a few dollars per year.
Then if you later want to do something bigger (sell stuff on your site, advertise, host a database, etc ...) then you may need to look at getting a physical or virtual server.

There is a lot of "it depends" with this question. If you would like to host your site on your own system you are going to need an ISP that allows you to run a server (usually much more expensive than a typical residential setup). The safest bet is to do what 16pide suggests and get some host space on a server and start from there.

If you want to self-host, no-ip.com has good how-to pages, though they are Windows oriented.

I self-hosted for several years; my ISP at the time had a policy that said "No webhosting services," but I was prepared to argue that I was not offering a service (even as I pulled the plug). They never hassled me; likely, I was so small they never noticed me.

My current ISP is actively hostile to self-hosting--they go so far as to block port 80 (not an insurmountable obstacle) and their policy says "no servers," so now I"m on GoDaddy, who has provided me with excellent service and, the few times I've had to use it, quick and competent tech support.
