bootloader in SAM Linux

I installed SAM Linux twice to Part.HDA6 , i have 3-4 other distro on the HDA. It (mandrake based) lets me put the bootloader in HDA6 or the master boot record on HDA. Any idea on how to get it on a dskt. (lilo or grub)??I can't get to it. Thanx, mike

Hmm, not sure what you're trying to do here. Sounds to me you have two or more Linux installs and you're trying to set up an option to boot either of these. Is this right?

Also, my personal favorite is Lilo.

Hi Harlin, I'm new and slow to progress in Linux as my time will allow. I managed to Qparted a drive into 4Part.s with a swap also. I have been just trying different distros, 1st the live CDs, then installing into the partitions. Some work-some don't(probably hardware reasons). Some allow bootloaders either lilo or grub to dskt. Fedora uses grub and it just boots from my H.D.. If i boot from dskt i can load Peanut(alinux) or Libranet(both KDE) The Fedora here uses Gnome. Sam Linux uses XFCE(somethin like that) and i like the "difference". I have installed successfully so it says and it asks where to put the bootloader. Either HDA6 or the master bootrecord on the HDA. Neither fires it up. I can't get to, to boot HDA6 and masterboot record of HDA continues to start-up Fedora4. I could move on to another distro and will be trying different ones anyway, BUT, I'd like to load-up the SAM if i can. I'm not savy enough to find or make the change.I think i had the same problem with PClinuxOS= i got it on there, but couldn't get to it. I had Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Fedora show up in a GRUB boot-up at one point, and i could choose between the 3. I don't know how it wound-up that way, it just did. Thanks, mike

Still not sure what your question is.

Also, paragraphs are nice :)

AH! you mean= net it out. I cannot boot SAM linux in HDA6. I put it in the same place twice, says successful. I suspect the bootloader is "someplace" i cannot get to? And, i don't know what it is using for a bootloader!? Howz that? Mike

i think i see what you are tring to do... you are tring to put a boot loader on a flopy disk, right?

mike99 06-27-2005 02:25 AM

Hi Goat that is talking. Having the bootloader on dskt would make it easy for me , but the SAM distro does not have that option in install. It asks weather i want to install it in HDA6, or on the master boot record in HDA. I tried both = nada. I thought that the 2nd option would net a boot on power-up. But Fedora fires-up as usual. It is using GRUB and i can see it for a couple seconds bfore it continues with the boot process. SAM is based on Mandrake, i think the install/partition program was called Diskdrake.thanx, mike

Should at least allow one to install boot to MBR... else it looks like a pretty crappy installer (and distro possibly) to me.

The SAM installer is erratic not always working correctly (sometimes does not allow the adding of a bootloader or adding root password or adding extra users).

This is obviously a shame, however it is not too hard to still get HD install going by entering directly into your present Grub/Lilo the appropriate instruction to boot Eg for Grub:

title SAM Linux
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11.6mdk ro root=/dev/hda5 acpi=ht

or something similar for your particular partition (in this case hda5)

Thanx Tony, any idea how i can edit the lilo/grub dskt to get to the SAM linux? Or can i only do that if its on the HDA? That would probably clear-up alot of my Distro installs i bet. I see what you gave as example in your note, but where do i put the info. in? Or, can i only do that, or edit at distro install?-which i can do as many times as it takes. Mike

I have just discovered that the installer works ok when started from a terminal. That is instead of running from the menu, open a terminal and become root (using su). Then type in "livecd-install" and the graphical installer will start. My experience has been that all the functionality should be there (formatting, root password, user details and password etc) without any errors.

Can you give this a shot.

Incidentally, do you realise there is an updated SAM available - SAM Revisited. See forum item below:

http://sam.hipsurfer.com/modules.php...thread&tid=317

The original developer of SAM seems to have disappeared recently but others have done an update. I have an entry later in that forum post detailing what I have done in remastering it.

Hi Tony. It worked thanx for the info. - using SAM here/now. I had to load 2times( i guess i needed the practice)- 1st time i installed the bootloader to HD0 MBR= when i rebooted, it said starting SAM linux, but what loaded was Yoper!? Which, was one of those distros that said it installed, but, i could never boot to it. I guess the SAM "fixed" something i goofed-up!? The 2nd time , i installed the bootloader to HDA6 partition and now when boot the PC it brings up a box so that i choose SAM-LINUX or HDA5(which happens to be Libranet that i normally use a dskt to boot to it). I looked at the SAM forum at the 2005.2b and looks like the list of stuff in it is alot larger than the 2005.2 that i am using her/now. I also have 2005.1SE and wonder if doing your command at # will install it also? Time for an experiment!,,, I think what i need to do to get help is to find a site that speaks to the bootloaders- installing and editing ,so that i am not just shot-guning the installs. I was so suprised to see the Yoper come up= laughed at myself for a couple minutes! And hey- this moves pretty good for a dial-up box. mike
