booting with / without KDE SuSE 8.2

Bought a SuSE 8.2 box preinstalled. KDE seems to work fine - what I want to know is ...
How to turn off the desktop on boot - I just want a shell (and the ability to load the desktop manually?).
Is this as simple as editing text boot file(s)?
Thanks for any info

I'm changing the run level (?)
Which takes out XDM (?)
So during session I could start X11 manually(?)
