booting from external hard disk

Dear members, I have a pc that can not boot from usb. I want to buy an external hard disk which can be connetcted to a usb port. I want to install Etch, Sidux and Slackware on external hard disk. My question is how to boot from that hard disk. At present I have a usb pendrive. If I plug that into a usb port and load Grub then,Grub does not read usb disk. That is, it does not see my usbdisk as a harddisk. Does this mean Grub will be unable to see my external hard drive, if I buy one. Please guide me.

well, i think one condition for a bootloader to see a disk is that the bios can "see" the disk. And this would mean, if your bios is not able to boot from that disk the bootloader can't "see" it as well.
Maybe a biosupdate can fix this.
