booting from another hd without lilo

i want to set aside a hard disk for linux and linux only. i don't want to mess with my boot disk. too many files to think of eventhough i have backups. what i want to do is to boot to that particular hard disk via the bios and not use lilo. much like what knoppix does but instead of the cd linux will boot on that drive. can this be done? in mandrake?

got any ideas? thanks!

you could also try doing the boot cycle via your BIOS. some bios will allow you to set IDE1 IDE2, etc.. as first boot.

the bios i have at the house will alow me to set to the specific device, not just IDE, sATA, CD, Floppy.

so i could have 4 different HDs in my system and tell it to boot off of HD3 if i wanted.

you might want to check your BIOS for something like that. this works great if you have 2 different types of HDs like sATA, IDE, or SCSI and IDE as more BIOS will alow that configuration over what i have on my ASUS board.
