booting bare.i disk hangs
 

Hello,
I was trying to install slackware 9.0. Previously I was able
to install slack on different but very similar board.
Here is the problem everytime i try to boot the bare.i disk
and hit enter with out entering in new parameters
the system hangs after stating the following:
IP: routing cache hash table of 512 buckets,
4kbytes

Now at sometime ago (2002/2003) I was able to go thru
the install process just fine. But this time
nothing.

My current hardware:
pcchips m741 board
western dig 4 g harddrive
maxtor 15 g hardrive.
nec monitor(17")

My old hardware:
pcchips m748LMRT
wstern dig 4g
nec monitor(17")

Any ideas?

Do you have a CDrom drive that supports bootable disks? If so, you can skip the floppies.

Yes I have a cdrom which boots ( I was able to boot via cdrom win98/ME)
but I am not sure if the iso image I have is bootable:
slackware-9.0-install.iso

A better question is how would I make the cd bootable using this image?
I tried the other day to burn slackware-9.0-install.iso as a image via NTI
and was unable. I still have the slackware-9.0-install.iso image download from orgeonstate Univ.

The CDs are MUCH easier to use than floppies.

I use K3b for burning ISOs in Linux, but there's some info on burning isos in Windows here:

let's see, are you trying to boot from a cdrom or a floppy disk?

when you have an iso file, you need to burn it as an image, not just throw the file onto a cd (use Nero for example in windows)

also, is the place you downloaed from a mirror of the slack ftp? if not, you may want to redownload your image from ftp.slackware.com or download bittorrent and get the slackware 9.1 cd's (2 cd's in about 1.5 hours)

I think I had a bad iso. I did the checksum and it was bad. Anyhow I found some new iso images under:linuxiso.org

2 discs. Also the burning software I had was NTI... now I am going to try and find a port verison of the cdrecord for windows so I can burn a proper boot cd. Still it bothers me that the floppies which I tried were hanging after ip cache. Any insight?

Not sure. I had a pile of trouble with the floppies when I tried to install Slack on a laptop with no CDrom, but mostly it was due to bad disks (a common thing these days, it seems)

Well I figure out what cause the hang... on the m741 board, you have to make sure on the bios that you disable the internal cache, if you are using a form card. Which in my case I was using a celeron 500 connect to slot 1 via a form card. Surprise, Surprise there is no cache on this form card. Any how on the m748 board you can directly connect a socket 370 chip straight to the board and set the jumpers. Hence the difference between this install and the previous.

But a bigger question. how on earth do you make a boot able cd? I was able to burn the iso image of slackware9.0 just fine using nero but ofcourse it is just a iso image and not a boot disk. Under the notes there is something about using the mkisofs to create a boot image. Since I am burning on a win2000 machine, I downloaded a port verison of mkisofs from gmd. Anyhow, my question how on earth do I now burn a new image?

For kicks and giggles I extracted the iso image and store it in a directory called c:\disc the copy of mkisofs is under c:\slack

any insights?

you can burn with nero or any other windows application just fine; windows is what many of us don't like, but many of the products are great

most windows application (nero, adaptec, roxio, etc) can burn "cd image files"

the iso itself contains bootable data; thus, burning the iso will automatically make a bootable cd

with the windows port of the normally linux program, there should be an option to burn iso's as well

I agree hence I have been using sunos and linux for a while but recently I switch boards (my dad hijacked my org. comp) Anyhow for this image the bootable one for slackware 9.0 is it the same one under linuxiso.org?
