boot up files

What are the scripts which run at boot up(files)?
how do you enable and disable programs which load at startup
how do you set classpath, which files should i edit.

I am using SLackware 10 i guess these things are similar for all linux distros.

your startup files are in /etc/rc.d
to enabe/disable startup just chmod it to either make it executable or not
