boot problem with dual-boot XP / RH 8.o

I'm an absolute Linux newbie and wanted to get in the stuff by setting up a dual-boot system to play around a bit and here's the first problem I get stuck with

System Specs:

Intel PIII-800
396 MB RAM
Board Asus P3-BF
Maxtor 40 GB HDD

---hda1 NTFS Zylinder 0-4xx
---hda2 EXT3 Zylinder 4xx-5xx /boot
---hda3 EXT3 Zylinder 5xx-109x /
-------hda5 /swap

Installing with this configuration works fine. Lilo screen shows up while booting and starting XP from there works fine ! When I start Linux as my OS I get following stack trace:

mounting /proc filesystem
creating block device
mkrootdev: label / not found
Mounting root filesystem
mount: error2 mounting ext3
pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed:2
umount /initrd/proc failed: 2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 212k freed
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to Kernel

I tried to install GRUB as my bootloader but got the same error.
I tried to start a rescue installation. It tries to load Linux and says that it don't find my Linux installation.

It seems to me like the root can not be found because of some configuration error but as I'm such a noob I have problems figuring out where the problem could be and how to fix it. Maybe it's only a wrong matched partition in a file on /boot Partition ?!

I would really appreciate any help and please try to explain in easy words and step by step

thank you very much in advance !

I think the problem might lie in your lilo.conf file. When you get the lilo prompt, hit Ctrl + X, then type 'linux single' without the quotes...

See if you can get booted that way to look at your lilo.conf file. Once you can see it, post it here so we can look at it.

At grub screen, select the line for your linux kernel, then type the letter e to edit the line.

Then at the end of the line, add the word single.

The line should then read linux single

That should help......maybe

Question RedH 7 and XP- LILO or GRUB

Hi, I'm new here.
Linux is not my job but a hobby I am trying to get into.
I have a problem with dual boot. I have loaded both XP and later Linux. Now when I boot I only get to Linux.

I need to activate LILO (tried but unsuccessful) I was told that GRUB would be better over 1024 cylinders (head started hurting)

Then came the code (started crying)

Is there an area I can download a complete GRUB installation to burn and instal on my PC to activate and take over the boot?
Also should i try to upgrade to Reedhat 9??
