Unhappy Boot problem

Hi All
I am fairly new to Linux.
I had set up my Pentium PC as a dual Boot with Mandrake 8.0 and WIN2000.
This was working fine for quite some time - I could select the system I wanted on startup.
Something has happened (I don't know what! ) and when I now boot up off the hard drive LILO stops at 'LI'
If I boot using a Mandrake boot diskette and not interfere with the boot process the process gets to the following:

Checking root filesystem/dev/hda5 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
(i.e., without -a or -p options)
UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY
Failed to check filesystem. Do you want to repair the errors? (beware you can loose data)

I need to know what action to take at his point.
Should I respond to this question with a 'Y' or is there some other action I should (or can) take.

I would really like to recover my WIN2000 system.
Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, as it's the root filesystem that's problematic, the system isn't going to let you go any farther until you do fix it, so...

You can boot from a floppy or the installation CD, get to a command prompt, and see if you can run fsck manually from there (fsck /dev/hda5).

Boot Problem

Thanks for your quick response. (I have been away from a computer for some time and have only just been able to post this response.)

I have been able to repair the filesystem and I am now back to my original problem where it stops at 'LI' when I try to boot via the hard drive.
However I can now boot up using the Mandrake boot diskette.
It seems I need to carry out some fixes/changes on the hard drive setup but don't know where to start.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Are there any good references that would be useful?

Regards
Graeme Grose
