Unhappy Boot manager?

I installed BasicLinux today and it's the first time I've ever used any distribution of Linux.
Anyway, Linux itself works... but I need a boot manager.

I have one HDD. Two partitions.
FAT16 and EXT2.

It keeps booting from FAT16.

Someone told me to install "lilo" but I don't seem to have it.
Can I install it? In that case where do I get it?

Or are there other alternatives?

it appears that basiclinux is more of a demo type linux. In other words it is supposed to boot from windows and most likely is not bootable by lilo or by grub. Are you sure that you have an ext2 partition? And are you sure you're linux system is using it? I've never heard of basiclinux before but from the quick glance at the website it says it just runs in a ramdisk not actually from the hd.

but if you do have an ext2 partition why not try installing some other distro such as slackware, suse, redhat, or debian?

You can install it to HDD if you want to.
I did that.

Then I tried XOSL boot manager but now it's all screwed.

What distrobution do you recommend?

486DX2, 66MHz, 9MB RAM.

BasicLinux worked just fine except the boot thing.

BTW, I can't boot from CD.

Help me! Please, urgent!

Slackware? Can I install that? Do I have to compile anything?

Wow... really restricted system. Ok... while slackware could work it would require lots of tailoring. Instead what I would recommend is sticking with the basiclinux system and download the lilo tarball then install it. (for instructions you can always check out the linuxfromscratch.org install book).

once you have lilo installed configure it and reinstall the bootloader you should be good to go.
