Boot into live mode
 

i'm watching a youtube video on how to add windows to ubuntu. he has us download and save windows to a usb. then he has us download ubuntu and save it to another usb (and we are already in ubuntu from the very beginning). after the ubuntu liveusb is created, he says, referring to the liveusb/ubuntu, "boot into live mode and stay there."

how do you boot into live mode of a liveusb when you are in ubuntu (non-liveusb)? when i think of booting i think of closing the computer and going to boot options and choosing usb-storage device and opening ubuntu from the liveusb. then, while in live mode, he says to open the disk utility.

is that what he wants us to do - shut down and boot from the liveusb / ubuntu? important side note: we already created a separate usb with the win10 iso files.

next we go to 'disk utility' and then 'unmount the hdd volume" and then format the hard disk to ntfs.

he finishes by saying, "now you can boot from your windows usb and install it to your hard drive."

so the main question is - what is boot into live mode" knowing that i am functioning from ubuntu non-usb, and that i just created an ubuntu-liveusb, and that i have a win10 usb with all of the win 10 files (that was just created, but not bootable until doing the steps described).

Yup! That's live mode. At that point you're running from your "Ubuntu Live USB" rather than your hard disk. Then continue with the steps you've outlined above. Prepping the disk, etc. You'll need to make separate partitions, one for Windows and One for Ubuntu

Note: You must install Windows before Ubuntu so the Grub bootloader can handle dual booting.

he says: download win10 iso to desktop, then use archive manager to extract the files and then move them to a new usb. then he says: you won't be able to boot from windows yet b/c the hard drive has not been prepared. but, you have a bootable windows usb to choose from in the boot options.

i don't see how using archive manager and extracting the files from the iso image and moving them to a usb creates a bootable win10 liveusb.........? does anyone believe it will?


i didn't use archive manager but with the command line i moved the iso files to a new usb; on the usb were like 3 folders and 4 docs. and that did not create a win10 liveusb. when you use archive manager does it extract everything out of the folders?

.............now i am trying to delete the files on the usb with the windows files but, 1, i get the error message; "write-protected...will mount as read only", and 2, if i try to format the usb, i deleted one of the partitions earlier, and now there is only the whole device and it won't let me format the whole device (sdb), ---- it wants a partition "sdb1", but it doesn't exist.

I think that's because you've written the ISO file to the USB, it'll take up the whole thing and, like a CD/DVD you can't write to it. I think you should be able to overwrite it though.

The Windows 10 ISO being extracted and copied to another USB stick sounds daft to me. I'd assume you'd create a Windows 10 ISO on the USB then boot from it when you want to install Windows? I've no idea how to get or generate a Windows 10 ISO though.

I think booting the Ubuntu live USB would be the way, Use Gparted from the live session to partition your main drive, two partitions, one NTFS for Windows, the other EXT4 for Ubuntu. Whatever size partition suits you.
Shutdown the Live Ubuntu, reboot but from the Windows ISO which should let you install on the NTFS partition. (I've no idea if this would work, it just seems logical to me Mr Spock. You'll probably need your Windows licence code somewhere here. It may also involve a lengthy phone call to Microsoft to verify it. Major pain in the neck!)

Once you've got windows up and running you can complete the Ubuntu install by booting the Ubuntu live USB stick
Click the install icon and proceed with caution! When it comes to the disk partitioning section, DO NOT SELECT "THE WHOLE DISK", select the EXT4 partition and install it there. (You could have separate partitions for / and /home if you want to preserve your data in the event of a future Linux re-install.)

That's my thoughts on the subject, someone more knowledgeable of Windows 10 may be able to offer better advice on that portion of the install.

You need to extract the windows files from the iso and then copy those exracted files to the usb. That still won't boot so you will need to either install Grub to the boot directory with windows or simpler, since you already have Grub with your Ubuntu install, put a proper entry in the Ubuntu /boot/grub/grub.cfg file for windows on the usb. If you format the hdd ntfs, that's the end of your installed Ubuntu. Is that what you intend? Not sure what you are doing with another Ubuntu live usb. How did you install it? If you want an Ubuntu live usb and don't have one, you need to use software created specifically designed for that purpose as simply copying the iso to the flash drive won't work, not unless you create a proper menuentry in the installed grub.cfg file.

It isn't really clear what your goal is, why another Ubuntu install usb when you already have it installed?
The method in the link above works find, used it myself multiple times, just make sure you read through it first so you understand it.
