Boot hang in Red Hat 4 v5 after SE linux relabel

On boot I get

** Warning -- SELinux relabel is required. ***
*** Disabling security enforcement. ***
*** Relabeling could take a very long time, ***
*** depending on file system size. ***

On the next screen the boot hangs.

There is a solution posted here:
http://wiki.xdroop.com/space/RedHat/...ELinux+Relabel

it states

I booted my VM from a rescue CD ISO, mounted the root directory, and:

# cd /mnt/local
# rm -f .autorelabel
Once this is done you may want to consider upgrading your VM to more -current that has this fixed.

I've booted using a knoppix CD, but I don't know how to mount the root directory to try the fix.

Please advise on this.
Any advice on sorting out my "boot hang" also much appreciated.

All the best,
2Hugh

the boot WILL hang because the file system ( the whole and ALL hdd's) are being edited
depending on the size of the drives this can take 20 min to 8 hours .

but seeing as this is the old RHEL4 i take it that this is a old server from 2003
is it a raid ? with 750+ gig ?

and that boot hang will happen every time that you turn off SE then turn it back on

i would use "setenforce 0 "
for doing a specific task ( like working on iptables)
then "setenforce 1" to turn it back on

Thanks John, I'll bear that in mind.

In the meantime, do you or anyone else, know how I can rescue the server from it's "hung" state?

My server is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 – A Dual-Core Intel Xeon 5300 sequence processors (2.33GHz), 4GB RAM, Red Hat Linux 4 Update 5 x86_64. Not sure of the HDD size.

All the best,
Hugh

I've booted in the knoppix and searched /dev but there doesn't seem to be a device that I can mount that will give me the root partition on the server. It's like knoppix has its ram disk, and cd rom, and usb device, but doesn't know that there is a hard disk on the server.

Can anyone confirm or deny this conclusion?

Hugh

My plan of action now is as follows:
A) reboot server and give it 24 hours to relabel the OS
B) when this is complete, check to see whether it is still hanging
C) if not - hoorah!
D) if it is, use a UBUNTU live disk to see if I can find /dev/sda(n) [where n is the partition number of for root].

Feel free to give me other ideas.

Thanks,
2Hugh

the knoppix cd should place a mount point for every partition on the desktop
it dose on my cd

but i am not running rhel4 in a VM environment ( on what a windows server 2003 )

Control C at the point of hang
Login
update corepolicyutils
su root
rm -f .autorelabel

Then reboot server.

Sorted.
