boot from usb install from harddrive
 

So I'm trying to install vector linux but my cddrive broke. So I can boot the instalation from a usb but then it says it can't find the installation media. It says it has to be on the harddrive or a cdrom. So how do I put the iso on a hardrive partition so it can be used by the installer.
I currently have windows alongside Linux mint. Can I put the iso somewhere on my existing linux partition or does it need to be on a blank one? Will this even work?

4.3 Direct ISO on a Linux Host

If you have another Linux running on the computer, this method will be easy. You need to download the following files into a directory (e.g: /home/download):

* The chosen VectorLinux ISO image file.
* vlinstall-iso
Find it as “install/vinstall/vinstall-iso” within the FTP site

Now go to the text console (press Cntrl-Alt-F1) and login as root. Proceed as follows:

* Switch to run level 2 (or 3 in Slackware/Redhat, etc)
init 2 <enter>
* Go to the directory where you downloaded the files, i.e.: /home/download
cd /home/download<enter>
* Now, install using the ISO file
./vinstall-iso vl-5.0.iso <enter>


I assume I can't install it on the same partition It's coming from right? But otherwis i think I got it.

Some Linux lets you install from USB?

I think its meant for a live disk maybe? but it will run an instalation iso up to a certain point.

Sounds like it will not work for you. Why not try a Linux distro that will work in installtion from USB?

Turns out the netboot program is awesome. What it does is extract the iso on your c drive or whatever in windows then lets you reboot right into the instalation and the instalation grabs the files from the windows partition. It should work for any iso. Anyways I got it installed.
