Boot from live CD on Macintosh G5 powerPC

I want to install Linux on a Macintosh G5 powerPC, and so far I haven't been able to figure out how to change the boot order on startup to allow booting from a live CD. Does anybody else out there know how to do this? Cheers.

Have you found a distro that has a live cd for a power pc system? As far as I know only a very old BeOS disk could be used like that.

The few remaining distro's that could use a PPC I think are only installer type disks. There may be a round about way of removing the disk and loading it remotely.

try #5ish: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/
it's iso@ cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

or boot to USB

Press the Option-key dow and hold it that way, then start the machine. After some time you should get to the firmware, where you can change the boot order.

Why does it have to be a live cd?

Thanx much, that sounds like the most viable option. I'll try it and let you know how it worked.

Because I have loads of live disks, but no viable USB media;]

P.S. - Either way, I believe I would still have to change the boot order.:twocents:

but your initial post says you want to install Linux. As such surely you only need an installation cd image not live cd image.

I much prefer a live disk image, it allows me to use the distro in question BEFORE actually installing it. And when I do install, it allows me to copy my custom-tailored .bash* files to the hard drive, as well as the driver(s) for my wireless network interface(s), and edit the /etc/sudoers file *before* the initial bootup.:hattip:

I'd still think there is no live media for ppc.

Have you found one?

A common use for live cd is to test a distro without installing it.

Can your system boot to a usb? It may be possible to boot to a cd and then boot further to a usb.

You may be right, I might need a live|installation disk image that's specifically made for PPC. I tried holding down the option key then turning on the machine, as suggested by TobiSGD. That gave me a graphic screen w\ 2 buttons; a `reload` button and a `forward` button. There was also 1 non-interactive icon which represented the HD. After giving the disk sufficient time to load, I tried clicking the `reload` button several times and got no results, and clicking the `forward` button only started the boot process from the HD. So apparently the computer's BIOS didn't recognize the live media [Manjaro KDE] in the disk tray.

I'll try live media of other distros and see what happens.

Where did you get a PPC Manjaro image from?

I've just discovered the link you sent to the Ubuntu 12.04 powerPC disk image. I'm downloading it right now. Let's hope it will sort me out... :Pengy:
