Boot Floppy and Firewire Hard Drive

I would like to boot linux from a firewire or usb external hard drive, but my computer's BIOS does not support booting from firewire or USB. I have read a good deal about creating a 'boot floppy', but I couldn't follow the procedure Can anyone give some n00b-friendly advice on how to create and use a boot floppy to boot linux from an external hard drive (particularly firewire)?
