Boot error when raid controler is added

The server has three hard drives in it. One is a standard ide drive on which linux is installed. The other two are configured as raid array using a w-680 ATA ide raid controller in one of the slots.

After I upgraded the mother board of the linux server i cannot get the server to boot when the raid controller is attached. The system boots and runs with only the IDE drive attached. The raid array is only used for data storage.

The error message is

mkrootdev: label / not found
mounting root file system
mount: error 2 mounting ect3
pivotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot/sysroot/initrd) failed : 2

The label / not found error is interesting. Have you tried passing the actual device of the root partition to the kernel (i.e. /dev/hda3 if your root partition is the thirs partition on the IDE primary master). Also have you checked cabling/jumpers on the disk and the controller card? It may be that somehow the IDE channel numbering is getting borked.

I have tried editing the /etc/fstab and the /LABEL entries with /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2. But this had no effect.

I have have since done a clean install on linux on which i have been able to add the raid controller and array without any problem.

I think the problem must have been with the GRUB installation settings which must have been trying to use the raid array during the boot up.

I dont understand why the grub configuration would reference the raid array during boot up its only a mounted data disk.

Im sorted now but is would be nice to know what caused the problem.
