Boot delay
I have re-installed Mepis after an 'accident' and updated it.
Everything is working as before except there is a 15 sec blank screen between the Grub and 'Welcome to Mepis' text. After that the boot is fast and normal.
Can I fix this?

You might try looking in /boot/grub/menu.lst and see if there is some abnmormal delay built in there. Here is what mine looks like on an FC6 machine:
Code:
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,6)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,6)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2849.fc6)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet irqpoll #pci=routeirq
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6.img
