boot after install with GRUB on boot drive

While back had dual boot with RHL9 and xp, tried to upgrade to Fedora, went poorly for some reason, so I stuck with XP for a while, now I want to dual boot again.

I installed no problem, but this time instead of installing GRUB on the MBR I put it on the boot drive, which I was told is more secure, is this so?

But now of course I cannot boot to linux, I remember howto configure windows boot loader, but I can't remember howto boot from a rescue CD.

I thought I just had to specify were the root was at the boot prompt

linux root=/dev/hda7

but it just goes into install mode.

What am I doing wrong??????????

thats why you make a boot floppy. you can try a dos program called loadlin. use a livecd copy vmlinuz to a small fat32 partition since dos can't read ntfs filesystem, copy loadlin to a win98 bootdisk which can be downloaded at boot with win98 floppy, run loadlin like this

loadlin c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hd*

where * is the partition where you have your distro installed.
