Cool Books on Linux

I recently upgraded my dual boot Pentium 4 machine running XP and Redhat Linux to Redhat 9. Success, but my new printer and scanner and modem which are USB powered and are not configured properly. I have an Epson 640U scanner and XSane gives me an error saying that the device is not recognized. I already know I need to modify the usr/lib/? files and probably change permissions somehow along with some front-ends/back-ends/makefiles. I don't know but it all sounds complicated and when I search the web for help the results are hard for me to follow. The printer is a Dell A940. It's a new one. But surprisingly, it was detected on start-up. I'm a fast learner but would like to know if there is a primer available for writing bash commands as root to make all these peripherals work nice together. Hate to be a pain but this has been alot of trial and error leaving me frustrated.

just because the hardware is detected, doesn't
mean it's supported.
Don't those dell's use lexmark cartridges?
you could try whatever lexmark drivers you have available.
